To all medlab volunteers and assistants,

Every weekend this month starting tomorrow afternoon, Dr. Voght and I will be holding an hour long discussion group on the basics of medical ethics, touching on medical responsibility, doctor-patient confidentiality, the patients' bill of rights and other topics. We are making it a requirement of all medlab workers that you attend at least one of these discussion groups. You are all welcome to come to more than one, because we do intend for these to be discussions not lectures, and if there are scheduling issues which prohibit you from attending any of them we ask that you contact one of us to schedule a personal meeting. Additionally, if you have any friends who are thinking about volunteering down here, or any who would be interested in the discussion whether or not they want to volunteer, you are more than free to invite them to join us. There will, of course, be tea, cocoa and cookies.

We know that, for many of you, this may seem to be fairly basic material as you all received some training in medical ethics before you began working down here but we ask that you consider this, not as a review of the basics but a reinforcement of the foundations of medical work. Something happened recently that has caused Amelia and myself to doubt how thorough the training we have been giving has been and so we've decided to start this group. If the discussions go well, we are considering continuing next month and beyond and opening the topics to include other matters of theoretical interest in the medical field.

Finally, if any of you no longer wish to be medical volunteers or consider the requirement of coming to one of these discussions too onerous a task we understand and will remove you from the volunteer rotation effective immediately.
